Stuffy Nose

A stuffy nose can be triggered by problems with the shape of your nose, swelling in the nose, or masses such as nasal polyps that can block the nasal passages. The best way to get relief in nasal congestion is to have a thorough clinical evaluation to identify the cause and treat the underlying condition.

Treating a Stuffy Nose at Home

Most congested or stuffy noses will clear up within a week. You can help the process along by staying hydrated and temporarily taking an over-the-counter decongestant. If your stuffy nose is the result of allergies, your doctor may recommend allergy medications or nasal steroid sprays.

Some natural remedies for nasal congestion include a hot shower to allow the steam from the water to break up thick secretions or irrigating your nasal passage with sterile saline to flush out your nose.

Nasal Congestion Treatment Options

Issues with the nose can be quite bothersome, affecting sleep, mood, and overall quality of life. When home remedies are not enough, an ENT can help identify the problem and provide relief. Whether you need nasal sprays to help with nasal allergies, septoplasty for a deviated septum, or sinus surgery for chronic sinusitis or nasal polyps, we’ve spent more than 25 years diagnosing and treating nasal breathing problems in southern Connecticut and are ready to help.

Common Causes of Nasal Congestion

The shape of your nose can have a major impact on your ability to breathe through your nose. If you’ve had a broken nose in the past, suffer from a deviated septum, or have unusually narrow nasal passages, you may benefit from an evaluation and correction to the structure of your nose.

Inflammation of your nasal passages resulting from sinusitis, allergy, or other irritants injury can also contribute to nasal congestion. While most inflammation can be resolved with rest and over-the-counter decongestants, we recommend making an appointment if you’re also experiencing sinus drainage, pain, or fever.

Nasal polyps are benign grape-like growths in the nose that can obstruct nasal airflow. While nasal polyps are a common cause of blockage,  swollen adenoids and nasal tumors can also block the nasal passages.
